Eu Pisei Na Folha Seca
What is a patuá?
In candomblé religious practice, a patuá is an item bringing protection to the wearer, like a talisman.
What does "a cobra vai fumar" (the snake will smoke) mean?
During World War II 25,000 Brazilian soldiers were sent to fight in Italy. It had been said that it was more likely that a snake would smoke a pipe than Brazil enter the war. The Brazilian forces (FEB) took the smoking snake as their insignia.
At the time, the phrase had been used to describe something unlikely, similar to the English "when pigs fly". However after the war it came to mean the opposite: something definitive and aggressive.
EU PISEI NA FOLHA SECA
Eu pisei na folha seca
E ouvi fazer, chue chua
Chue chue chue chua
Ouvi fazer, chue chua
Mas quem não pode com mandinga
Não carrega patuá
Ouvi fazer, chue chua
Joga nego para cima
Deixa o nego invadiar,
Ouvi fazer chue chua
O guerreiro senzalero,
Essa cobra vai fumar
Ouvi fazer chue chua
~
I stepped on the dry leaves
And heard them go 'chue chua'
Chue chue chue chua
I heard it go chue chua
Whoever doesn't have mandinga
Doesn't carry their patua
I heard it go chue chua
He plays high up
Let the guy close in
I heard it go chue chua
The slavehouse warrior,
That snake will smoke
I heard it go chue chua

Tomorrow is the saint's day
One two three
The day of God's people
Three plus three, six
Whoever has nice clothes, goes to mass
Six plus three, nine
Whoever doesn't, does like me
Nine plus three, twelve

Capoeira Pra Mim E Uma So
CAPOEIRA PRA MIM É UMA SÓ
In Portuguese and English
Watch this song on youtube
Capoeira pra mim é uma só
Que contagia muita gente
No toque do berimbau
A luta fica diferente
Capoeira pra mim é uma só
Que contagia muita gente
No toque do berimbau
A luta fica diferente
Meu mestre sempre me disse
Pra nao esquecer os fundamentos
Capoeira joga em cima
Joga em baixo e joga dentro
Capoeira pra mim é uma só
Que contagia muita gente
No toque do berimbau
A luta fica diferente
~
Capoeira for me is only one
That affects many people
In the rhythm of the berimbau
The fight is different
Capoeira for me is only one
That affects many people
In the rhythm of the berimbau
The fight is different
My master always told me
To not forget the basics
A capoeirista plays high up
Plays low, and plays close
Capoeira for me is only one
That affects many people
In the rhythm of the berimbau
The fight is different

Watch this song on youtube
Vim no balanço do mar la de Angola
Vim no balanço do mar la da Guiné
Vim no balanço do mar de Mozambique
Só quem veio sabe como é
Vim no balanço do mar la de Angola
Vim no balanço do mar la da Guiné
Vim no balanço do mar de Mozambique
Só quem veio sabe como é
Vim no navio negreiro
Com uma corrente no pé
Trabalhar como escravo
Na colheita do café
Vim no balanço do mar la de Angola
Vim no balanço do mar la da Guiné
Vim no balanço do mar de Mozambique
Só quem veio sabe como é
Hoje sou negro liberto
A escravidão acabou
Hoje eu sinto saudades
Da terra que la ficou
Vim no balanço do mar la de Angola
Vim no balanço do mar la da Guiné
Vim no balanço do mar de Mozambique
Só quem veio sabe como é
~
I came on the waves of the sea from Angola
I came on the waves of the sea from Guinea
I came on the waves of the sea from Mozambique
Only those who came know how that is
I came on the waves of the sea from Angola
I came on the waves of the sea from Guinea
I came on the waves of the sea from Mozambique
Only those who came know how that is
I came on a slave boat
With a chain on my foot
To work as a slave
In the coffee harvest
I came on the waves of the sea from Angola
I came on the waves of the sea from Guinea
I came on the waves of the sea from Mozambique
Only those who came know how that is
Today I am a free man
The slavery has ended
Today I miss
The land that I left behind
I came on the waves of the sea from Angola
I came on the waves of the sea from Guinea
I came on the waves of the sea from Mozambique
Only those who came know how that is
