Eu Pisei Na Folha Seca

What is a patuá?

In candomblé religious practice, a patuá is an item bringing protection to the wearer, like a talisman.

What does "a cobra vai fumar" (the snake will smoke) mean?

During World War II 25,000 Brazilian soldiers were sent to fight in Italy. It had been said that it was more likely that a snake would smoke a pipe than Brazil enter the war. The Brazilian forces (FEB) took the smoking snake as their insignia.
At the time, the phrase had been used to describe something unlikely, similar to the English "when pigs fly". However after the war it came to mean the opposite: something definitive and aggressive.

EU PISEI NA FOLHA SECA
In Portuguese and English

Eu pisei na folha seca
E ouvi fazer, chue chua
Chue chue chue chua
Ouvi fazer, chue chua

Mas quem não pode com mandinga
Não carrega patuá
Ouvi fazer, chue chua

Joga nego para cima
Deixa o nego invadiar,
Ouvi fazer chue chua

O guerreiro senzalero,
Essa cobra vai fumar
Ouvi fazer chue chua

~

I stepped on the dry leaves
And heard them go 'chue chua'
Chue chue chue chua
I heard it go chue chua

Whoever doesn't have mandinga
Doesn't carry their patua
I heard it go chue chua

He plays high up
Let the guy close in
I heard it go chue chua

The slavehouse warrior,
That snake will smoke
I heard it go chue chua

Rainha Do Mar

RAINHA DO MAR (MORA IEMANJA)
In Portuguese and English

Watch this song on youtube

Quando a maré baixar
Vá lhe visitar
Vá lhe fazer devoção
Vá lhe presentear

No mar
Mora Iemanjá
No mar
Mora Iemanjá
No mar
Mora Iemanjá

Vários negros foram pro Brasil
Bantus, Nagôs e Iorubás
Dentro do navio negreiro
Deixaram suas lagrimas correr no mar

No mar
Mora Iemanjá
No mar
Mora Iemanjá
No mar
Mora Iemanjá

Sua lagrima que correu no mar
Tocou no peito de Iemanjá
Ela podia mudar a maré
Fazer meu navio voltar pra Guiné

No mar
Mora Iemanjá
No mar
Mora Iemanjá
No mar
Mora Iemanjá

~

When the tide is low
Go to visit her
Go to make your devotion to her
Go make offerings to her

In the sea
Lives Iemanjá
In the sea
Lives Iemanjá
In the sea
Lives Iemanjá

Various black people were brought to Brazil
Bantus, Nagôs and Yorubás
In the slave ship
Let your tears run into the sea

In the sea
Lives Iemanjá
In the sea
Lives Iemanjá
In the sea
Lives Iemanjá

Your tears that ran into the sea
Touched the heart of Iemanjá
She could turn the tide
Make my ship go back to Guinea

In the sea
Lives Iemanjá
In the sea
Lives Iemanjá
In the sea
Lives Iemanjá

Sao Bento Me Chama, Sao Bento Me Quer

SÃO BENTO ME CHAMA (SÃO BENTO ME QUER)
In Portuguese and English

Watch this song on youtube

São Bento me chama
São Bento me quer
São Bento proteja
Quem Capoeira é

São Bento me chama
São Bento me quer
São Bento proteja
Quem Capoeira é

Protega quem já foi
E aqueles que vem
E a todos aqui
E a Capoeira também

São Bento me chama
São Bento me quer
São Bento proteja
Quem Capoeira é

Martelo que derruba
Meia-lua que vai
Rasteira que vem
E o corpo que cai

São Bento me chama
São Bento me quer
São Bento proteja
Quem Capoeira é

E na benguela
E no jogo da angola
E na regional
Não me deixe de fora

São Bento me chama
São Bento me quer
São Bento proteja
Quem Capoeira é

Mestre Bimba falou
Agora que entendi
Capoeira é o caminho
Quem quiser vai seguir

~

Saint Benedict calls me
Saint Benedict wants me
Saint Benedict protects
Whoever is a capoeirista

Saint Benedict calls me
Saint Benedict wants me
Saint Benedict protects
Whoever is a capoeirista

He protects those already there
And those that come
And everyone here
And the capoeirista as well

Saint Benedict calls me
Saint Benedict wants me
Saint Benedict protects
Whoever is a capoeirista

The martelo that knocks down
The meia-lua that goes
The rasteira that comes
And the body that falls

Saint Benedict calls me
Saint Benedict wants me
Saint Benedict protects
Whoever is a capoeirista

And in Benguela
And in the the Angola game
And in Regional
Don't leave me out

Saint Benedict calls me
Saint Benedict wants me
Saint Benedict protects
Whoever is a capoeirista

Mestre Bimba said
Now that I've understood
Capoeira is the path
Whoever wants to, will follow

Valha-me Deus, Senhor Sao Bento

Watch out for the experienced capoeirista, they will catch you out...

VALHA-ME DEUS, SENHOR SÃO BENTO

Valha-me Deus, senhor São Bento
Vou cantar meu barravento
Valha-me Deus senhor São Bento
Buraco fundo tem cobra dentro
Valha-me Deus senhor São Bento
Vou soltar meu barravento
Valha-me Deus senhor São Bento

~

Bless me God, St Benedict
I’ll sing my barravento
Bless me God, St Benedict
The deep hole has a snake within
Bless me God, St Benedict
I’ll give my barravento
Bless me God, St Benedict

Ai Ai Ai Ai (Sao Bento Me Chama)

This song may have a couple of meanings. On one hand, it can be a straightforward reference to St Benedict. However it may also refer to the toque: if the game is getting out of step with the music, the mestre may want to draw the players attention to it (the toque calls you to play capoeira, so play accordingly!)

(Thanks Mestre Chitaozinho for explaining this!)

AI AI AI AI (SÃO BENTO ME CHAMA)

Watch this song on youtube

Ai, ai, ai, ai
São Bento me chama
Ai, ai, ai, ai
São Bento me leva
Ai, ai, ai, ai
São Bento me prenda
Ai, ai, ai, ai
São Bento me solta
Ai, ai, ai, ai
São Bento chamou
Ai, ai, ai, ai
Chamou pra jogar
Ai, ai, ai, ai
Jogar capoeira
Ai, ai, ai, ai
E me joga no chão
Ai, ai, ai, ai

~

Ai, ai, ai, ai
Saint Benedict calls me
Ai, ai, ai, ai
Saint Benedict takes me
Ai, ai, ai, ai
Saint Benedict holds me
Ai, ai, ai, ai
Saint Benedict releases me
Ai, ai, ai, ai
Saint Benedict called
Ai, ai, ai, ai
Called for playing
Ai, ai, ai, ai
To play capoeira
Ai, ai, ai, ai
It throws me to the floor
Ai, ai, ai, ai
